R3 Series — Turn and Lane Use Signs
Regulatory Signs · CA MUTCD Part 2, Chapter 2B
The R3 Series covers regulatory signs that control turning movements, lane-use requirements, restricted movements, and channelization at intersections and roadway segments. This series includes turn prohibitions (No Right Turn, No Left Turn, No U-Turn, No Turns), channelization instructions (Keep Right, Keep Left), turn-only mandates (Right Turn Only, Left Turn Only), and movement permissions. In California work zones, R3 signs appear wherever lane closures, median work, or roadway realignment changes which movements are permissible at an affected intersection or approach. They carry the same legal weight as all regulatory signs and must be authorized by the agency with jurisdiction over the roadway.
California Field Use Notes
R3 signs appear on California TCPs when a lane closure, median work, or roadway realignment changes which movements are permissible at an affected intersection. A common plan-review deficiency is showing an R3 turn prohibition without confirming that the restriction has been authorized and does not conflict with existing traffic signal phasing or intersection control. When R3 signs are used, the TCP must also show how conflicting movements are handled — including coordination with the local traffic signal agency if signals are present.
Showing 8 of 8 signs
Prohibits a right turn at the intersection or location where the sign is posted, making it a traffic law violation to turn right.
Prohibits a left turn at the intersection or location where the sign is posted, making it a traffic law violation to turn left.
Prohibits a U-turn at the location where the sign is posted, making it illegal to reverse direction.
Requires drivers to turn right at the intersection, prohibiting any other movement from that lane or approach.
Requires drivers to turn left at the intersection, prohibiting any other movement from that lane or approach.
Prohibits all turning movements — both right and left turns — at the intersection where the sign is posted.
