R9 Series — Pedestrian and Bicycle Signs
Pedestrian & Sidewalk Closure Signs · CA MUTCD Part 6, Chapter 6D
The R9 Series covers regulatory signs that direct and protect pedestrians and cyclists at crossings, sidewalk closures, and bike facilities. SIDEWALK CLOSED (R9-9), SIDEWALK CLOSED AHEAD (R9-8), PEDESTRIAN CROSSING (R9-10), and related signs are required in California whenever work activity closes or reroutes a sidewalk, crosswalk, or bicycle lane. These signs are part of the Temporary Pedestrian Access Route (TPAR) required on California TCPs that affect pedestrian pathways.
California Field Use Notes
Any California encroachment permit project that blocks or alters pedestrian access must include R9 series signs and an ADA-accessible TPAR. Missing or incorrect R9 signage is one of the most common pedestrian-related plan-review deficiencies in Los Angeles County and the City of Los Angeles. The path must maintain accessible surface conditions, running slope, cross slope, and width throughout the project.
