R1 Series — Stop and Yield Signs
Regulatory Signs · CA MUTCD Part 2, Chapter 2B
The R1 Series is the foundational right-of-way control series, covering STOP (R1-1) and YIELD (R1-2). These signs establish legal stop and yield obligations at intersections and access points. In temporary traffic control, R1 signs may appear at temporary intersections created by a detour, at flagging check-points where vehicles must stop before proceeding, or wherever a permanent signal has been knocked out and stop-control is required.
California Field Use Notes
STOP signs used in temporary traffic control must meet the same color, shape, and retroreflectivity standards as permanent installations. In California work zones, a temporary STOP cannot be substituted for a flagger — both serve different functions. If a signal is dark or removed, a temporary STOP must be posted and supported by the agency with jurisdiction. Los Angeles projects often require LADOT approval for any temporary stop-control changes.
